Isla de Cabras, a small island extending over the bay of San Juan where you can enjoy an afternoon walk and have a relaxing picnic with the most scenic views of El Morro, the city walls.  You’ll see mega cruise ships and industrial ships enter the bay. Five hundred years ago this same bay was almost impossible to enter, the Spanish protected the bay with the construction Castillo San Felipe del Morro (across the island) and the onsite Fortin of San Juan de la Cruz.

If you visit the fortress of El Morro in Old San Juan, you would see Isla de Cabras from the northwest side.

The small island offers a snack bar, picnic, and restroom facilities. Park is free to access but there’s a parking fee.  The beaches are not for bathing, this is a place to relax, take pictures, enjoy the views, visit the historic site and get some exercise.  If you’re a tourist, it’s a nice stop after touring the Bacardi Rum Factory. Bring your swimsuit along and visit the Blue Flag beach of Punta Salinas. Not too far from here, you can also enjoy the beaches of Manati.

Be sure to bring your camera,  you can capture gorgeous scenes from just about every spot in Isla de Cabras.

Highlights of Isla de Cabras, Toa Baja, Puerto Rico

Fortin San Juan de la Cruz, part of San Juan National Historic Site – This nice recreational park houses Fort San Juan de la Cruz (also known as El Cañuelo), designated as part of the San Juan National Historic Site. This small fort doesn’t get much attention or visits but it certainly should.  Fort San Juan de la Cruz may be small in size but it was very important in the defense of the San Juan  Bay, it worked in conjunction with El Morro in Old San Juan.  The fort is closed but you can appreciate its exterior architecture.

Picnic tables and gazebos are available in Isla de Cabras.   During weekdays the park is pretty empty. During weekends and holidays, the park gets fuller, call to reserve a picnic spot.

Isla de Cabras is a great place to take a walk or jog with the added pleasures of breathtaking views and cooling ocean breeze.
