Puerto Rico Tourism Guide ⎮ Puerto Rico Southern Region Guide
The most popular tourist town in the southern region of Puerto Rico is Ponce, the second-largest city on the island. Because of the region’s central location, with a car rental, you will have easy access to a long list of attractions on the west, east and central mountains. Following is a guide to the top places to visit, beaches, tours, and best places to stay.
Guide to Help you Plan your Stay in Puerto Rico
+ Playa Pelicano
Playa Pelicano is located in Caja de Muertos, an island on the southern coast of Puerto Rico, part of the municipality of Ponce. The allure of Pelican Beach is the feeling of being away on a secluded island, there are no hotels or food kiosks and that’s part of the magic, being on a beach untouched by development. The water is perfect… warm, with shades of blue and green that change constantly with the rays of the sun. Sand is soft and white. If you can pull yourself away from the beach, go for a hike to the lighthouse, there’s a great reward at the top.
Punta Tuna Beach
+ Playa Punta Tunas
Best beach for solitude, long walk on the beach, bringing a lounge chair, and simply admiring the water and scenic views of the mountains and lighthouse perched on the cliff. Not a beach for swimming, but the scenery is worth a trip on the east coast.
- San Juan Airport, offering the most daily flight and choice of airlines (about 45 minutes away).
- Meredita International Airport in Ponce – Many locals fly into Ponce and budget-savvy travelers may want to check rates.
Driving from San Juan
From the San Juan International Airport (Luis Munoz Marin), head south on Rt. 52. Most towns are easily accessible from Rt. 52.
